German public transport fare hikes

In late July 2026, two regional transport authorities in Germany announced fare adjustments for their networks. The Verkehrsverbund Vogtland revealed a uniform tariff increase of about 8.5 % across its system, set to take effect on 1 August 2026. Alongside the price change, Vogtland introduced a chip‑card exchange programme (vcm+) and announced temporary line and station closures during the summer holidays to maintain service reliability.

A few days later, the Mitteldeutscher Verkehrsverbund (MDV) confirmed a separate fare rise for bus, tram and regional train services in the Leipzig and Halle (Saale) area, also slated for early August. The MDV increase amounts to roughly five percent and has been criticised by the Die Linke party, which argues that public transport should be treated as a basic service and advocates for fare‑free options. Both announcements reflect routine periodic adjustments in German regional transport pricing.
