German public transport fare increases

Overview

Public transport associations in Germany have announced upcoming fare adjustments driven by rising personnel and energy costs.

In Hamburg, the HVV announced that effective January 1, ticket prices will increase and a 7 percent digital discount for app and online purchases will be abolished. The association noted that because more than half of tickets are now sold digitally, the incentive for digital sales is no longer necessary. Some passengers may face price increases of up to 21.9 percent, and certain options, such as weekly tickets, will be discontinued.

In Augsburg, the AVV will implement an average fare increase of 3.4 percent starting January 1, 2027. Managing Director Manuela Schaar stated that current revenues cover at most half of operating costs, with the remainder subsidized by local government. Alongside these hikes, the AVV plans to expand its service area to include the Dillingen an der Donau and Donau-Ries districts, necessitating a restructuring of revenue distribution models.
