German renewable ammonia supply development
Overview
Efforts to secure ammonia supply chains for Germany and Europe have progressed through various international partnerships and auction results.
In mid-September 2026, Covestro, Fertiglobe, and MB Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore an ammonia value chain in Germany. This collaboration aims to strengthen European industrial resilience by establishing new import routes, including a potential import terminal at Blumensand in Hamburg proposed by MB Energy.
By late September 2026, the German-backed H2Global auction mechanism secured a major supply deal. AM Green, an India-based developer, was selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot to supply renewable ammonia to Germany. Under the agreement, Hintco will purchase Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) ammonia from AM Green’s Kakinada facility for a minimum value of €585 million over a 10-year period. Deliveries from India are expected to reach Germany starting in 2029.
