German tourist fatalities at European beaches
Overview
Recent reports indicate multiple fatalities involving German tourists at beaches in Southern Europe.
In late August, an 81-year-old German woman died at Llevant beach in Salou, Tarragona, despite resuscitation efforts by emergency services. At the time, the beach was under lifeguard supervision with a green flag flying. This incident contributed to a reported total of 23 beach-related fatalities along the Catalan coast during the summer.
In early September, two German tourists, aged 53 and 80, drowned at separate beaches in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of the Basque Country. The 53-year-old man suffered cardiac arrest at Pavillon-Royal beach in Bidart; surfers pulled him from the water, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Authorities suggested he may have been caught in a strong current. Later that day, an 80-year-old man was found lifeless at Corsaires beach in Anglet after suffering cardiac arrest.
Both incidents occurred at locations where daily lifeguard surveillance had ended on August 31 following the conclusion of the summer holiday period. In response, local authorities have appealed to tourists to swim only at beaches where lifeguard surveillance remains active. These deaths occurred amid broader reports that over 300 people have drowned in France during the current summer season, a 14 percent increase compared to the previous year.
