German Youth Word 2026: Finalists Announced

Overview

In late July 2026, the annual Jugendwort des Jahres contest entered its voting phase. Tagesschau presenter Susanne Daubner opened the competition with an Instagram video in which she read the ten shortlisted terms and performed a line from the viral song ‘Du bist gut genug’ by Blumengarten, Kitschkrieg, and Shirin David. The clip attracted over one million likes and generated significant online engagement.

Langenscheidt Verlag released the official shortlist, which included ‘67’ (a TikTok-born numeric slang), ‘Crashout’, ‘Digga’, ‘Du bist gut genug’, ‘Gute Käse’, ‘Macker’, ‘Peak’, ‘Ragebait’, ‘Schere’, and ‘Süper’. While the term ‘67’ was a highly frequent candidate, the publisher reportedly excluded the term ‘Mehrzweckeier’ from the shortlist due to political and offensive connotations.

Following the initial voting period, the three finalists have been announced. All three are English-derived terms: ‘Crashout’ (losing control or reacting with extreme emotion), ‘Peak’ (describing the absolute best), and ‘Ragebait’ (content designed to trigger anger for engagement). The popular numeric term ‘67’ did not make the final three. A second round of voting is currently underway and will run until 28 September. The winner will be officially revealed by Pons Langenscheidt on 10 October at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
