Germany Deutschlandticket price to rise to 66.80 euros in 20

Overview

The price of the Deutschlandticket is set to increase on January 1, 2027, to 66.80 euros, rising from the 63-euro rate established in January 2026. The Coordinating Council, comprising federal and state transport ministries, municipal associations, and the transport industry, finalized this adjustment via an automated cost index developed by D-Tix GmbH & Co. KG. This index accounts for personnel (55%), energy (20%), and general operating costs (25%), a mechanism designed to provide financial predictability and avoid annual political disputes.

Subsidized versions will also increase: the Jobticket will rise to 63.46 euros, and the Semesterticket for students to 40.08 euros. While the ticket’s long-term availability was previously a subject of uncertainty, its validity has now been extended through 2030. To help offset revenue losses, the federal government intends to provide 1.5 billion euros in annual support to the states.

Despite these measures, affordability disparities persist. Because discounts for seniors and social welfare recipients are managed by individual states and transport associations rather than through a unified federal mandate, costs vary by location. While recipients of certain benefits like Bürgergeld may access subsidized social tickets, retirees with incomes slightly above social assistance thresholds often face the full price.

Reaction remains critical. The passenger association Pro Bahn has expressed reluctance, with Detlef Neuß previously suggesting authorities consider discounts instead of increases. Additionally, Greenpeace has warned that rapid price hikes could discourage the shift away from fossil fuels and undermine climate protection goals.
