Germany outdoor pool illness incidents
Entities: Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Klima Nordrhein-Westfalen · Naturbad Ennigerloh · Heilbronn City Health Department · Umweltbundesamt · Heilbronn
Overview
In early July 2026, the historic Gesundbrunnen outdoor pool in Heilbronn, Baden‑Württemberg, reported multiple cases of diarrhoea and vomiting among swimmers. A visitor claimed baby feces were seen in the children’s pool, prompting immediate extra chlorination and a special cleaning procedure, although the water was not fully drained. City health officials later found water‑quality parameters within normal ranges and suggested that the illnesses might also have stemmed from food‑borne sources.
Later in the month, the Naturbad Ennigerloh in North‑Rhine Westphalia was temporarily closed after a surge of vomiting and diarrhoea among visitors raised concerns of a norovirus outbreak. Laboratory tests found no norovirus in the water, and the facility’s shower, sanitation and contact surfaces were thoroughly disinfected. The pool was reopened after the negative results and cleaning were confirmed.
Both incidents illustrate how German outdoor swimming facilities have responded to sudden reports of gastrointestinal illness with swift closures, extensive testing and intensified hygiene measures, even when standard water‑quality checks show no abnormal contamination.
