Overview

A major police operation led to the complete closure of the Rheinfelden-Autobahn border crossing between Germany and Switzerland in both directions. The closure affected the A861 on the German side and the A3 in Switzerland, causing significant traffic congestion.

The operation was initiated after explosives-detection dogs from the Federal Police and Swiss Customs alerted to the presence of explosives in a vehicle entering Switzerland from Germany. Authorities also identified criminal suspicion against the vehicle’s registered owner through the Schengen States’ cross-border notification and search system. Two men were provisionally detained, and German bomb disposal experts were deployed to investigate the vehicle.
