Overview

Ghana’s 24-hour economy policy has moved into the implementation and critique stages across different regions. In Kwadaso, Municipal Chief Executive Eric Assibey launched the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Market. This multi-purpose facility is intended to include a clinic, banking centre, and police station to support round-the-clock trading and boost productivity through a three-shift working system.

However, the policy has faced local opposition in other areas. In the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District, Nana Okatakyi Prof. Amanfi VII, the Chief of the Asebu Traditional Area, questioned the practicality of 24-hour markets in an agricultural district. He argued that the local economy, which relies on crops like maize and cassava, does not benefit from midnight commerce and suggested that the government prioritize rehabilitating existing markets instead.
