Ghana agricultural and agro-processing investment

Overview

Ghana is implementing various initiatives to strengthen its agricultural sector and agro-processing capabilities. Initially, the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA) launched a regional investment roadshow across the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions to convert agribusiness, logistics, and manufacturing potential into bankable projects. This effort had already attracted approximately US$383.65 million in foreign direct investment from nations including India, the United Kingdom, and China.

Building on these efforts, the national government announced a ‘New Economy’ programme, a strategy to invest $10 billion over four years across seven priority sectors. Agriculture and agro-processing are slated to receive 50% of this funding, totaling $5 billion. Key components include rehabilitating the Pwalugu Tomato Factory in the Upper East Region and expanding irrigation infrastructure to support year-round cultivation, particularly for young people. Local efforts, such as the Grassroots Integrated Agriculture Support Programme (GIASP) in the Bolgatanga Central constituency, complement these goals by providing farmers with fertilizer, seedlings, tractor services, and irrigation assistance to reduce reliance on imports from Burkina Faso.

Expanding on this industrial vision, the government is now working to convert approximately US$12 billion in announced and pipeline investments into operational businesses. Following a 2025 report showing US$2.6 billion in foreign direct investment across 250 projects, Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare emphasized shifting focus from attracting capital to expanding productive capacity. While agribusiness remains a priority for local processing, the government is also targeting textiles, garments, pharmaceuticals, and automotive manufacturing to drive industrial transformation.
