Ghana green economy and horticulture development
Overview
Ghana is implementing several initiatives to bolster its green economy and agricultural sectors. In August 2026, preparations were announced for two major horticultural events in Accra scheduled for September. The Ghana International Horticulture Expo, themed ‘From Soil to Sovereignty: Building Ghana’s Agricultural Self-Reliance,’ aims to connect farmers and investors to strengthen local production and export diversification.
Concurrently, the 14th Ghana Garden and Flower Show, themed ‘Green Means Business, Beauty and More,’ is scheduled to take place from September 11 to 21, 2026, at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra. Organized by the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement, the event seeks to shift the focus of horticulture from aesthetics to its potential as a significant economic driver. Planned activities include a Horticulture Roundtable to discuss industry challenges, a ‘Green to Riches’ conference focused on youth entrepreneurship, and various masterclasses in gardening and landscaping to promote job creation.
Furthering these economic goals, the Ghana TVET Service and the International Labour Organization have launched the Green TVET Initiative. This program integrates climate resilience and green skills into technical and vocational education, training educators, including principals and facilitators, in climate-smart technologies. This training is intended to ensure students acquire the practical competencies necessary for industries such as sustainable agriculture and renewable energy, preparing the workforce for the evolving global labor market.
