Ghana legal actions over political disinformation

In late July 2026 Ghanaian courts moved against two political figures accused of spreading false information online. On 21 July, a National Democratic Congress organiser was granted bail after being charged with offensive conduct and publishing false news in a TikTok video that alleged wrongdoing by former Vice‑President Mahamudu Bawumia. Five days later, a New Patriotic Party communicator was the subject of a bench warrant for failing to appear on charges of threatening death and disseminating fabricated claims about a presidential order to halt food deliveries to a detainee of the Economic and Organised Crime Office. Both cases illustrate an escalating judicial response to political disinformation and threats in Ghana, with courts imposing bail, warrants, and adjournments as the investigations proceed.

The two proceedings, though involving different parties and accusations, are linked by the broader pattern of authorities confronting online content that is deemed false or incendiary, particularly when directed at political leaders or state agencies.
