Ghana National Ambulance Service capacity expansion

Overview

The Ghana Ministry of Health and the National Ambulance Service (NAS) have initiated efforts to bolster the nation’s emergency response capacity through asset recovery and new procurement.

Initially, 30 ambulances were transferred to National Security for refurbishment after receiving legal clearance from the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice. These vehicles, located at the Ghana Air Force Base, are undergoing assessment and refurbishment to be reintegrated into the national fleet.

Expanding on these efforts, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced that the government plans to procure 100 new ambulances for the NAS by 2027. The government also intends to allocate additional funding for the maintenance of the existing fleet and is working to complete a Legal Instrument (LI) to establish a stronger regulatory framework for the NAS.
