Ghana One Million Coders Programme implementation

Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), a national initiative launched in April 2025 to train one million citizens in ICT-related skills, is currently navigating challenges regarding participant completion rates. As of September 2026, approximately 140,000 people have registered, but Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George reported that only about 10,000 participants—roughly 7%—have finished a course.

To improve these rates and reach the four-year goal, the government is integrating the programme into the formal education system. Agreements have been established with 12 universities, including the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, which have made the programme a requirement for first-year students. These partnerships are expected to contribute nearly 100,000 participants.

The programme is also expanding its local reach, recently being introduced to the Jomoro constituency in the Western Region to equip local youth with skills in cybersecurity, networking, data analytics, and data protection. Meanwhile, officials have identified a need for improved rural telephony and connectivity to support digital skills development outside of major urban centers.
