Ghana One Million Coders rollout

In late July 2026 the Ghanaian government expanded its One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) by delivering an additional 2,000 laptops to the University of Ghana, raising the total devices supplied for the initiative to 2,500. The hand‑over, led by Minister Samuel Nartey George, was presented as a key investment in the country’s digital future and aimed at equipping beneficiaries with skills in coding, AI, cybersecurity and related fields.

A few days later the University of Ghana announced that artificial intelligence and digital‑skills training would become central to its undergraduate curriculum. Building on the laptop donation, four OMCP certifications – Prompting Essentials, AI Essentials, AI Professional and Digital Literacy – will be required in a new Level 100 Digital Literacy and Applied AI course. The move is intended to ensure that all students gain a solid grounding in AI, use the technology responsibly, and improve their employability, while the expanded laptop pool supports large‑scale delivery of the training.

Together, the laptop distribution and curriculum integration illustrate the Ghanaian government’s effort to scale up digital education and embed AI competencies across higher‑education institutions as part of the broader OMCP ambition to train one million Ghanaians in digital skills.
