Ghana senior high school reforms

In July 2026 Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced a GH₵3 billion infrastructure programme aimed at eliminating the double‑track system in senior high schools, a move intended to address long‑standing capacity shortfalls and improve secondary‑education access and quality.

A week later the ministry convened a two‑day National Conference in Sunyani on stemming indiscipline in senior high schools. Officials, school leaders, parents, religious figures, security forces and development partners gathered to discuss a series of violent incidents, including a fatal stabbing and an alleged gang‑rape, and to develop a coordinated framework for values‑based education and safer learning environments. The conference’s recommendations will feed into policy guidance for the ongoing reforms.

Together, the announcements show a broadening of Ghana’s senior‑high agenda from infrastructure upgrades to addressing behavioural challenges, signalling a comprehensive effort to improve both the physical capacity and the learning climate of secondary education.
