Ghana university expansion under Mahama

In late July 2026 the Mahama administration announced two major moves to strengthen Ghana’s higher‑education system. First, President John Dramani Mahama said the University of Ghana Medical Centre would be transferred from the Ministry of Health to the university, with a transition roadmap to follow. At the same ceremony he highlighted the “No‑Fee‑Stress” program aimed at removing financial barriers for capable students, and praised a large graduating cohort.

Later the same day, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu disclosed a GH₵50 million allocation from the Ghana Education Trust Fund for the newly commissioned University of Mines and Technology’s Kenyasi campus. The funding will build an administration block and student dormitories, part of a pledge to develop the campus into a full public university before President Mahama leaves office in 2028. Together, the announcements illustrate a coordinated push to expand university infrastructure, improve governance of medical education, and broaden access for students across Ghana.
