Ghanaian economic accountability demands
Overview
Political and research figures in Ghana have called for greater transparency regarding the administration’s economic spending and the efficacy of its development programs.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ranking Member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, demanded accountability for approximately GH¢650 billion allocated to various initiatives. He specifically questioned the results of the 24-hour economy policy, the One Million Coders programme, the Women’s Development Bank, and the Nkokonkitinkiti poultry initiative, suggesting the government must prove job creation through verifiable records before introducing a “new economy” in the 2027 Budget.
Following these calls, the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy (IERPP) also challenged President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to account for the $4 billion 24-Hour Economy programme. Executive Director Professor Isaac Boadi noted that despite targets to create 1.7 million jobs, the government has failed to provide specific employment figures, which he argued undermines public confidence in national resource management.
