Overview
GitHub has updated the billing and functional capabilities of its Copilot service. In June 2026, the company transitioned Copilot Enterprise and other plans from a request-based model to a usage-based model using GitHub AI Credits. Under this new structure, costs are determined by token consumption—including input, output, and cached tokens—rather than a fixed number of premium requests.
Alongside these billing changes, GitHub expanded the tool’s technical utility. New features include specialized support for Java development, such as automating boilerplate code and assisting with Spring Boot applications. Additionally, the Copilot CLI was introduced as a standalone agent within the terminal, capable of reading repositories, planning changes, and executing shell commands with user approval.
