Global and Czech streaming content expansion
Overview
Streaming services continue to expand their libraries through diverse licensing and original productions. In the United States, Apple TV has added 19 licensed Hollywood films, including ‘Titanic’ and ‘E.T.’, to its catalog. Recent global additions include the crime thriller ‘The Whisperer’ (Našeptávač) on Netflix, festival films like ‘Hamnet’ and ‘Sirat’ on HBO Max, and Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller ‘The Day of Revelation’ (Den odhalení) on PVOD.
In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the digital and terrestrial media landscapes are shifting. AMC Global Media has launched SELEKT Light, a free, advertising-supported streaming platform that replaces the former AMC Mikro service. Available via web browsers and mobile applications, the service requires registration but no monthly subscription fee. A single account supports up to five devices with a maximum of three simultaneous streams. The platform features a Czech-language interface and a catalog spanning films, series, children’s programming, and genres such as action, comedy, drama, crime, and westerns. It also offers live sports, including UEFA Nations League, Europa League, and Conference League matches, the Champions Hockey League, and PDC European Tour darts. This launch, powered by Applicaster’s Zapp platform, follows the introduction of the SELEKT brand in Hungary.
Specialized services like DAFilms continue to provide access to over 1,300 auteur and documentary titles. On terrestrial television, the departure of Sporty TV from multiplex 23 has led to its replacement by Prima Sport. Domestic Czech productions remain a focal point of success. A comedy directed by Marta Ferencová, featuring a cast including Eva Holubová and Jaroslav Dušek, has transitioned from a modest theatrical run of approximately 50,000 attendees to becoming a top performer on Netflix. Additionally, the national broadcaster Česká televize continues to expand its iVysílání platform with foreign series to compete with international providers.
