Global digital safety concerns for children

Overview

Global concerns regarding the digital safety of children and youth have intensified, focusing on cyberbullying, identity theft, and privacy violations.

A United Nations report noted that many children lack the means to report online harassment, which can lead to social exclusion and anxiety. In Brazil, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics issued guidelines advising against sharing identifiable content on social media and warned of the “high ethical risk” of uploading children's images to open artificial intelligence platforms.

As the school year begins, technological advancements have introduced new threats, such as AI-driven identity theft. In the Czech Republic, approximately one-third of respondents expressed concern regarding fraud involving the impersonation of family members. In Spain, the Antoni Maura Institute reported issues with anonymous meme accounts using the school's logo to circulate images of students and staff without consent.

Recent developments in Argentina highlight the severe impact of AI-generated content. In Villa Bosch, students and parents at Instituto Pío XII Leonardo Murialdo protested after allegations surfaced that classmates used artificial intelligence to create and sell nude images of female students aged 13 to 14. Victims reported the images were created from real photos and used for “harassment, defamation, and extortion.”

Similar incidents have been reported at Colegio Modelo Lomas and Colegio Thomas Alva Edison. In Río Tercero, Córdoba, police conducted raids on several adolescents' homes following reports of AI-generated intimate images, seizing electronic devices as part of an investigation by the Fiscalía de Fuero Múltiple N° 2. Families have criticized school responses that offer counseling or shift changes rather than expulsion.
