Global El Niño weather phenomenon impacts

Overview

A strengthening El Niño weather pattern is projected to cause significant meteorological shifts across multiple continents. In Latin America, reports from CEPAL and NOAA indicate a 75 percent chance of the phenomenon reaching historic magnitude by December, raising risks of increased rainfall and flooding in northern and central-eastern Argentina.

In West Africa, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued advisories regarding a strong El Niño event developing in the tropical Pacific. Based on projections from the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is a 96 percent likelihood that the event will reach very strong intensity between November 2026 and January 2027.

Impacts in Ghana are expected to begin in late November 2026, characterized by hotter, drier, and dustier conditions. Peak heat stress is projected for northern Ghana between February and April 2027. While much of the country may face below-normal rainfall, GMet noted that some areas in the Forest and Transition zones, as well as parts of the Greater Accra, Central, Volta, and Eastern regions, could experience normal-to-above-normal rainfall.

Despite the threat of dry spells, GMet cautioned that southern and Volta Basin communities face risks of sudden, intense downpours and localized flooding. Long-term concerns include threats to cocoa production, rain-fed agriculture, public health, and hydropower stability, with potential water resource issues lasting as late as 2028.
