Global energy storage sector expansion
Overview
Global energy companies continue to expand their footprint in the energy storage sector through localized manufacturing, strategic partnerships, and large-scale infrastructure projects.
In Egypt, the government is advancing significant renewable initiatives. Nefer Minya Renewable Energy, a joint venture between Infinity Power Holding and HAU Energy, has been granted a golden license for a $750 million solar-plus-storage project in the Minya Governorate. This project aims to develop 1 GW of solar capacity and a 600 MWh battery energy storage system by late September 2027. Additionally, the Green Sharm project in South Sinai has received 826 solar-powered streetlights via a grant from China to support sustainable urban transitions. These developments follow previous discussions between Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, and Huawei Egypt regarding local battery manufacturing.
Regional momentum is also visible in Saudi Arabia, where the Saudi Power Procurement Company has entered storage service agreements for four battery energy storage projects totaling 2 GW, representing an investment exceeding $1.16 billion. In Türkiye, the Asian Development Bank has agreed to provide $50 million in financing to Yapı Kredi Leasing to support clean energy and efficiency investments.
International manufacturers are also scaling operations. Tianqi Hongyuan has secured a 1GWh energy storage supply project in the United Kingdom, with an initial 250MWh delivery scheduled within one year. In Australia, SAJ has partnered with distributor Supply Partners to launch its EK70 residential system and other commercial products. Meanwhile, Jinko ESS has deployed a 23MWh commercial storage project, and LONGi continues its ‘LONGi ONE’ solar-plus-storage rollout in Egypt as part of its goal to establish 30 global ‘Centers of Excellence’ by 2028.
