Global observance of care and caregiver support

Overview

The International Day of Care and Support has highlighted global gender inequalities, specifically regarding the disproportionate amount of unpaid care work performed by women. This imbalance is noted as a barrier to economic autonomy and professional development.

In response to these challenges, various nations have implemented specific initiatives. Spain has seen calls for increased public investment in care services, while Uruguay and Portugal have established specialized spaces and municipal programs to support families and informal caregivers.

As the focus shifts toward the International Day of Caregivers, efforts have centered on addressing caregiver burnout and strengthening community support networks. In Chile, month-long programs through its National Support and Care System have been implemented to bolster community networks.

In Spain, recent commemorations of the International Day of Caregivers have included cultural and regional recognition. In Móstoles, the third edition of the itinerant exhibition “Vidas que Cuentan” (Lives that Count) was inaugurated at the Museo de la Ciudad to share the stories of caregivers. In Andalusia, the regional Minister of Social Services, Families, and Equality, Loles López, visited La Palma del Condado to recognize both family and professional caregivers. López reported that the number of people benefiting from dependency systems in Andalusia has increased by 70 percent since 2018, noting that the region manages approximately half of all Home Help Service (SAD) benefits in Spain.
