Global road safety and infrastructure challenges

Overview

Road safety concerns are being highlighted through various regulatory, infrastructural, and systemic issues across different regions.

In some instances, enforcement of driving postures has led to fines, such as a 200-euro penalty for a driver resting an arm outside a window, under the premise that such actions may limit vehicle control. Concurrently, deteriorating infrastructure in areas like Ciudad Guayana, including potholes, uneven surfaces, and inadequate street lighting, has been identified as a trigger for traffic accidents.

In Quito, the crisis has manifested in rising mortality rates, with traffic accidents climbing from the eighth to the third leading cause of death between 2021 and 2024. Data indicates a 13% increase in traffic deaths and an 11% increase in injuries between 2024 and 2025. This rise is compounded by reported budget misallocations, where specific cantons responsible for over 50% of accidents received less than 30% of the budget intended for road signaling.

Recent data shows varying global trends. In Spain, the Dirección General de Tráfico reported 1,775 deaths in 2025, a 1% decrease from the previous year, though hospitalizations rose by 3%. In Zamora, deaths fell by one-third compared to 2024 despite an increase in total accidents. Conversely, in Venezuela, the Observatorio de Seguridad Vial recorded 377 accidents in August 2026, resulting in 131 deaths and 432 injuries, with motorcyclists being the most affected. In Mexico, Córdoba reported 65 victims through July 2026, including 20 homicides. Additionally, a major bus accident in Cauca, Colombia, resulted in five deaths after a vehicle fell into a ravine; authorities are investigating if an attempted robbery caused the driver to lose control.
