Overview

The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), or Shanghai Ranking, highlights a shifting global academic landscape. Harvard University has maintained the top global position for 24 consecutive years, followed by Stanford and MIT. While the United States dominates the top tier, China is significantly expanding its presence, increasing its number of universities in the top 100 from 13 to 16 and holding 234 institutions in the top 1,000.

In Spain, the number of universities in the top 1,000 has decreased from 36 to 30. Eight institutions fell out of the rankings, including the Universities of Cantabria, Baleares, Jaén, Lleida, Carlos III de Madrid, Cádiz, Córdoba, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Conversely, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and the University of Valladolid re-entered the list. The University of Barcelona remains the leading Spanish institution in the 151-200 bracket. The University of Seville showed improvement, climbing 49 positions to reach the 401-500 range, while the University of the Basque Country remains in the top 400.

In the Balkan region, the University of Belgrade dropped from the top 500 to the 501-600 range. The University of Ljubljana also saw a decline, moving to the 601-700 group, while the University of Zagreb maintained its position within that same bracket.

Regional absences were noted in Romania and Peru, a trend attributed to the ranking’s heavy emphasis on elite research metrics such as Nobel Prizes and highly cited researchers.
