Gold mining industry market and operational trends

Overview

Gold mining operations and market activity continue to be driven by rising gold prices, which recently recovered to nearly 4,700 USD per fine ounce. This price surge follows an August 19 announcement regarding the expansion of long-term US Treasury bond buybacks, which triggered a roughly 3% increase in gold value.

In response to these conditions, GoldMining Inc. is focusing on its São Jorge operations while maintaining interests in Whistler. The company reports a diversified portfolio of gold and gold-copper projects across the Americas, with a global resource base including 13.1 million ounces of measured and indicated gold equivalent. Its La Mina project in Colombia is currently its most advanced economic asset, with an updated Preliminary Economic Assessment modeling a post-tax NPV5 of $1.0 billion at a gold price of $3,500 per ounce.

Global market strength is further supported by central bank demand. According to the World Gold Council, average annual central bank purchases over the last four years have reached approximately 1,000 tonnes, doubling the average from the previous decade. In the second quarter of 2026, a net addition of 289 tonnes was recorded.

High prices have fueled significant profit growth and increased merger and acquisition (M&A) activity. In China, the top 10 mainland-listed gold producers reported combined H1 net profits exceeding $8 billion. Zijin Mining led industry M&A spending, investing approximately $3.4 billion. In Australia, Resolute Mining reported a 129% increase in H1 2026 net profit after tax to $162.6 million, supported by an average realized gold price of $4,712 per ounce.
