Gold ore discovery in Hunan Province
Overview
Geologists in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, have identified a massive gold ore system at the Wangu mine. Following extensive drilling involving 55 wells and 65 km of drill cores, officials reported finding approximately 300 tons of gold at a depth of 2,000 meters.
Analysis of rock samples revealed ‘visible gold’ with some concentrations reaching up to 138 grams per ton of ore. While highly profitable mines typically extract 1–3 grams per ton, these samples represent exceptionally high ore grades.
Using three-dimensional geological modeling, researchers believe the ore bodies may extend to depths of 3,000 meters. Based on these projections, total gold resources could potentially exceed 1,000 to 1,100 tons, which would make the Wangu mine one of the largest in the world. The potential reserves are estimated to be valued at approximately 600 billion yuan (83 billion USD), though these figures require independent verification.
