Overview
A major technical disruption in the Google Cloud europe-west2 region, centered in London, has caused widespread service outages across Europe. Google has attributed the incident to a “power event” at its London infrastructure, which triggered network failures and increased error rates for various cloud products.
The outage, which lasted approximately eight hours on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, significantly impacted various sectors, including the National Health Service (NHS England), government portals, and court services. The HM Courts & Tribunals Service specifically reported disruptions to its Cloud Video Platform used for remote legal hearings. Major financial institutions such as Lloyds, HSBC, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland have also been affected. In Germany, ING reported problems accessing digital banking services.
Digital platforms including Royal Mail, DPD, and the real estate portal Rightmove experienced disruptions, as did the budgeting app Emma. Digital bank Revolut reported widespread issues across multiple countries, including Bulgaria, Italy, Romania, Greece, Poland, and Portugal. Reported problems included difficulties with mobile application logins, card payments at physical and online retailers, bank transfers, ATM withdrawals, automatic currency exchange, and account top-ups.
By October 22, Revolut notified customers that while services had been restored, card transactions and refunds processed during the interruption may take several days to reflect in account balances as the company works through a backlog. Revolut and other affected institutions have emphasized that customer funds and personal data remain secure.
