Google Maps AI integration and immersive navigation

Entities: Google · Android Auto · Ask Maps · Gemini (Personal Intelligence) · Gemini (Google AI)

Overview

Google Maps continues to broaden its navigation suite for long trips. It still offers offline map downloads, parking‑spot saving, live‑location sharing, battery‑saving settings and extensive points of interest for pedestrians and drivers. Reviewers note that, compared with Waze, Maps provides offline turn‑by‑turn routing, 3D views, public‑transit integration and rich business information, while still using Waze’s crowd‑sourced traffic data.

Both apps remain tightly integrated with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to switch between them as needed. Google Maps has restored the visual display of the vehicle’s current speed in Android Auto, showing the speed alongside the posted limit. Waze continues to rely on its community for aggressive rerouting around accidents, police and hazards.

In July 2026 Google announced AI‑driven enhancements. An integration with Gemini Personal Intelligence automatically pulls reservation details, flight information, hotel bookings and other data—contacts, Gmail, Photos, Calendar, Drive, Search and YouTube—from a user’s Google account into the Ask Maps interface. Traffic forecasting now combines real‑time anonymous speed data with AI‑based predictions to anticipate congestion before it forms. The offline‑map feature remains highlighted for remote destinations.

The July 25 rollout moved Immersive Navigation—offering 3‑D‑style map rendering and clearer turn prompts—and a tachymeter speed display for Android Auto from beta to the stable version, making these features widely available. The updates are being delivered globally as part of Google’s broader effort to make Maps a more intelligent, data‑rich navigation assistant.
