Google Wallet interface and digital pass redesign
Overview
Google is implementing a significant redesign of the digital pass interface within the Google Wallet app on Android. The update transitions from small, rectangular card formats to an immersive, full-screen display. The new design utilizes the primary color of an associated brand to fill the entire background of the pass. For instance, an IKEA card would display a yellow or blue background based on the company’s branding. The layout has been restructured to place the issuing organization’s logo at the top center, while user-specific data and management features are moved to the bottom to improve information hierarchy.
Functional updates include enhanced interactivity through scrolling, allowing users to access linked actions such as visiting official websites or calling phone numbers directly from the pass. Management features, such as editing card nicknames, have also been integrated more directly into the view or settings menu, moving away from being hidden under a three-dot sub-menu. While the redesign covers loyalty cards, membership cards, and boarding passes, transit cards currently maintain the previous design.
Further interface changes involve the replacement of the traditional horizontal card carousel with a vertically stacked list of saved payment cards. This new layout allows users to see one full card preview with a sliver of the next card visible. By tapping or swiping down, users can enter an expanded full-screen view to see all saved debit and credit cards at once. This vertical arrangement is intended to improve one-handed smartphone operation. However, navigation has changed; card details and transaction histories are no longer accessed directly through the card itself but have been moved to a new settings gear icon in the top-right corner. This update is being deployed via Google’s servers, appearing automatically without a manual app store update.
