Government official impersonation scams

Overview

Law enforcement and local authorities have issued warnings regarding various scams involving the impersonation of officials to defraud citizens.

In the United States, agencies in North Judson and Allegheny County reported criminals posing as police or sheriff’s officials. These scammers use high-pressure tactics, such as threatening arrest for missed jury duty or warrants, and may use public records like inmate rosters to build trust. They attempt to extort money through ATMs, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or electronic payment apps.

In Vietnam, police in Dak Doa commune warned of scammers using the Zalo messaging app to impersonate People’s Committee officials. These perpetrators use video calls with staged government backgrounds to guide victims through fraudulent administrative procedures, such as integrating land use certificates into electronic identification applications. The scams aim to steal bank account details, facial photos, and OTP codes under the guise of service fees.
