Greece electrical interconnection projects

Overview

Greece is advancing multiple electrical interconnection projects to enhance energy connectivity and network resilience.

The GREGY project, aimed at transporting clean electricity from Egypt to Europe, has entered its implementation phase. The implementing company, ELICA, launched tenders in mid-July 2026 for seabed research and onshore geotechnical studies in Egypt and Greece. These studies are slated for completion by the first quarter of 2028, with technical specification tenders expected in 2027 and a Final Investment Decision anticipated by mid-2028.

Simultaneously, the GRITA 2 interconnection project between Greece and Italy is accelerating. The Greek Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) and Italy’s Terna plan to begin seabed surveys early next year, with international tenders for cable systems and converter stations targeted for summer 2027. Construction for GRITA 2 is expected to commence in 2028.

To support these developments, ADMIE is focusing on smart technologies to increase existing infrastructure capacity and is implementing a program to replace critical equipment to improve network resilience.
