Greece weather: Severe storms, flooding, and landslides

Overview

Greece has transitioned from mild autumn weather to a period of intense instability characterized by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and significant flooding.

Following heavy rainfall in late October, which saw over 100mm of rain in Magnesia and the Sporades, the country has faced severe consequences. In Magnesia, specifically in South Pelion, the village of Platanias suffered major damage after a local stream overflowed, cutting the settlement in two and trapping residents. Authorities issued a 112 emergency alert, advising citizens to move to higher floors. This flooding has also damaged water infrastructure, leaving several settlements without potable water.

On the island of Skiathos, torrential rains transformed central roads into torrents and caused landslides, resulting in road closures.

Meteorologists warn that while some areas may see a temporary easing of phenomena, a new low-pressure system approaching from the west is expected to bring further instability. This system is predicted to bring increased rainfall and a drop in temperatures across much of the country from Sunday through the first ten days of November. This upcoming period is expected to bring continuous and potentially dangerous weather patterns, including snow in the mountainous regions of the central country.

Forecasts for October 30 indicate unsettled weather with cloud cover and local rainfall across mainland and island regions. Sporadic thunderstorms are expected from the afternoon in most mainland areas, excluding Thrace, as well as in the Ionian Islands, Crete, and the Dodecanese. Temperatures remain relatively low, with Athens ranging between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius and Thessaloniki between 12 and 19 degrees Celsius. Increased dust concentrations are anticipated in eastern parts of the country, while a further deterioration in weather conditions, including heavy rain and storms, is predicted for Sunday, primarily affecting Western Greece.
