Greek basketball litigation between Olympiacos and Panathina

Overview

An ESAKE Sports Judge cleared Olympiacos B.C. of a complaint filed by Panathinaikos B.C. that sought a two-point deduction. The complaint stemmed from a civil lawsuit regarding an unauthorized court entry during the previous season’s finals.

Olympiacos also reported receiving a fourth recent complaint from Panathinaikos, this time targeting coach Georgios Bartzokas. The new allegation claims Bartzokas promotes violence following a match against Iraklis.

While the prosecutor did not find evidence of defamatory intent by Olympiacos in posting the video, an investigation has been opened to identify the individuals responsible for the original chants. Panathinaikos criticized Olympiacos for issuing what they termed ‘inaccurate and ridiculous announcements’ instead of offering an apology for the incident.

Recently, tensions escalated as Olympiacos B.C. issued a sharp rebuttal to Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos regarding his social media comments on refereeing and an ongoing investigation. Olympiacos denied any connection to the investigation, accused Giannakopoulos of attempting to create a ‘communication spectacle’, and vowed to provide a ‘crushing response’ to attacks. Giannakopoulos responded via Instagram, stating he would share the club’s announcement to ensure visibility and suggesting that their claims might soon expose others.
