Greek customs modernization and reorganization
Overview
The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has undertaken several initiatives to modernize and reorganize customs operations in Greece.
In early September 2026, Greece activated the Centralized Customs Clearance procedure for Authorized Economic Operators (AEO). This measure, implemented alongside the Automated Export System (AES), allows approved operators to submit declarations at their headquarters regardless of where goods are physically located. This move made Greece the 11th EU member state to adopt such a process, intended to reduce administrative burdens and enhance competitiveness.
Following this, AADE announced the launch of a new East Attica Customs office in Spata, scheduled for October 12, 2026. This reorganization consolidates the functions of the Athens International Airport, Lavrio, and Rafina customs offices into a single jurisdiction. The restructuring aims to manage commercial flows through centralized operations, holistic digitalization, and the implementation of a Digital Cargo and Goods Tracking System to address growth in e-commerce, logistics, and international air cargo.
