Greek FMCG market growth 2026
Entities: Kiwifruit · Strawberries · Recovery and Resilience Fund · National Bank of Greece · Greek yogurt industry
Overview
In the first half of 2026 Greece’s organized FMCG market posted a 5.4 % year‑on‑year rise, with sales value reaching about €5.7 billion. Food and drink remained the dominant category, expanding 5.9 %, while dairy (+8.6 %), fresh foods (+7.3 %), snacks (+6.5 %) and non‑alcoholic beverages (+6.4 %) posted double‑digit gains. All retail formats grew, led by hypermarkets (+9.1 %) and superettes (+8.9 %). Geographic growth was strongest in the Ionian and Aegean islands (+9 %) and Crete (+8.2 %). Promotional activity continued to slip, with the share of sales driven by promotions falling to 40.3 % from 44.4 % a year earlier. Private‑label share held steady at roughly 24 % of the overall FMCG market and 33 % within household‑care.
Exports remained modestly positive, with a 0.2 % real‑terms increase over the first five months of 2026. Greece’s share of EU food exports rose to 0.59 % from 0.56 %, and the country improved its market share in seven of nine geographic regions and nine of eleven product categories. The three leading export products—yogurt, kiwifruit and strawberries—accounted for three‑quarters of export growth and two‑thirds of the EU‑share gain, driving a 0.9‑percentage‑point boost from Europe and a 1.8‑point contribution from the food sector overall. North‑American shipments fell but less sharply than those of competitors.
Dairy producer MEVGAL reported a 15.48 % surge in 2025 exports, buoyed by strong demand for Greek yogurt and feta. Its 2026 plan includes a new yogurt production facility financed through a loan under Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Fund, aiming to deepen export channels and sustain growth despite inflation, high energy costs and raw‑material price volatility.
