Greek foreign policy and regional security concerns

Overview

Following his participation in the UN General Assembly and visits to San Francisco, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has further defined Greece’s domestic and foreign priorities. Domestically, he has identified the cost of living as a primary focus, aiming to contain energy prices and increase disposable income through tax relief and wage growth. He has specifically signaled a priority to mitigate costs related to fuel and heating oil through targeted interventions and by seeking greater European flexibility regarding energy taxation. On the international stage, Mitsotakis continues to position Greece as a “bridge” of stability amidst a volatile geopolitical landscape. He reiterated that while Greece seeks open communication and dialogue with Turkey based on good neighborliness, such efforts cannot coexist with unilateral actions that violate international law or legitimacy. He noted that while Turkish rhetoric has recently softened, Greece will not compromise on its national positions. In terms of regional energy security, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis announced that Greece is advancing an electricity interconnection project with Cyprus, in cooperation with France and the European Union. Recognized as a Project of Common Interest, the initiative aims to end the energy isolation of Cyprus and enhance European market resilience. The project will proceed with licensing and the issuance of necessary NAVTEX for cable survey and installation. Regarding the technical implementation of the interconnection, Gerapetritis clarified that the cable path is located dozens of miles south of Turkish maritime zones, stating there is “no reason for a re-routing” and maintaining that the initiative is a European project that should not be obstructed. Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, advocating for state oversight and regulation.
