Greek higher‑education reform debate

In late July 2026, Greek educator Bera Lazeni, a member of the PASOK‑KINAL Central Policy Committee, highlighted the outcomes of the Panhellenic university entrance exams. While congratulating successful students, she emphasized systemic problems such as unaffordable student housing, a labour market that favours connections over merit, and limited prospects for graduates. Lazeni called for comprehensive reforms, including modernising curricula, better support for teachers, expanded student‑housing programmes, and a merit‑based job market.

A few days later, the ELME Piraeus teachers’ union issued a statement on the same exam results. It echoed Lazeni’s concerns about the high cost of housing, meals, transport and textbooks for students. The union urged student bodies to demand free tuition, free student residences, free meals and transportation, modern facilities, and degrees that ensure full employment and social security. It also encouraged students who missed target scores to pursue alternative pathways.

Together, the two statements illustrate a growing push from both academic figures and trade unions in Greece for sweeping reforms to make higher education financially accessible and to improve post‑graduation outcomes.
