Greek island healthcare system improvements
Overview
Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has reported various improvements to the National Health System (ESY) across Greek islands.
In Kalymnos, infrastructure upgrades were implemented to resolve water quality issues, including the installation of a complete water storage, chlorination, and distribution system. Medical services on the island were also bolstered through the relocation of a neurosurgery director, the planned transfer of an orthopedic team from Rhodes, and the hiring of auxiliary staff for critical specialties.
Similar improvements were noted at Kos General Hospital. Following feedback from the British Consulate in Rhodes and the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), stakeholders reported an increase in medical staff and better incident management during the tourist season. Georgiadis noted that these interventions have led to a “visible improvement in healthcare coverage for the islands” compared to the significant issues faced when he took office in January 2024.
