Greek military infrastructure and funding developments

Overview

The Greek Ministry of National Defence is utilizing various funding streams to support military infrastructure and reform. In July 2026, the Ministry announced an €8.1 million tender for the construction of three residential complexes at the ‘Mavromichali’ barracks on the island of Rhodes, a project expected to take approximately 30 months.

This infrastructure development coincides with a significant increase in private contributions. Between July 2023 and August 21, 2026, the Ministry reported receiving approximately €116.8 million in donations. These funds have seen a sharp annual increase, rising from roughly €298,000 in mid-2023 to over €55.2 million in the first eight months of 2026. Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias characterized these donations as a “practical contribution to the vision of a strong nation.”

In addition to residential projects and private donations, the Ministry has announced a €63.5 million program dedicated to the energy upgrade and modernization of military factories. This initiative comprises six major projects intended to enhance production capabilities and reduce energy requirements while strengthening the domestic defense production base. Key investments include €20 million for the Branch Military Factory in Attica, €20.5 million for the Advanced Base Factory (304 PEB) in Volos, and €7 million for the Advanced Base Factory (308 PEB) in Thessaloniki. Further allocations are directed toward the Interbranch Chemical Laboratory, naval maintenance facilities in Salamis, and the State Aircraft Factory in Attica.
