Greek National Health System infrastructure upgrades
Overview
Greece has initiated several infrastructure and operational upgrades for its healthcare system. Initial efforts focused on energy modernization at specific facilities, with contracts signed for approximately 6.97 million euros to upgrade the Alexandra General Hospital in Athens and the Kilkis General Hospital. These projects aim to reduce energy consumption through thermal insulation, electromechanical upgrades, and the use of renewable energy.
Building on these facility-specific upgrades, the Greek Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Economy and Finance announced a broader 8.26 million euro initiative to upgrade the National Health System (ESY). Funded via the ESPA ‘Human Resources and Social Cohesion 2021-2027’ program, this investment is divided into two primary actions. Approximately 2.2 million euros is dedicated to improving Emergency Departments and surgical scheduling through digital tools, redesigned patient flow processes, and better coordination to reduce waiting times and minimize surgical cancellations. The remaining 6.06 million euros is allocated to support the economic and operational sustainability of health services.
Additionally, the Ministry of Health has secured the continuation of the ‘PROLAMVANO’ preventive medicine program through 2030. Supported by 75 million euros in annual national funding, this program provides free screenings for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers, cardiovascular disease monitoring, and ongoing treatment for obesity management.
Expanding the scope of energy modernization, the Ministry of National Economy and Finance has secured €13,869,238 from the ESPA ‘Environment and Climate Change 2021-2027’ program for healthcare facility upgrades. In Karditsa, €5,300,566.36 will fund renovations at the General Hospital and the Center for Physical and Medical Rehabilitation, including thermal insulation, LED lighting, photovoltaic systems, and the replacement of medical equipment with low-consumption technology to improve energy ratings. At the University General Hospital of Alexandroupoli, upgrades will include an advanced Building Management System, extensive wall insulation, and a 2MWp photovoltaic system.
