Greek progressive parties dispute Farandouri case
Entities: PASOK · Lina Mendoni · SYRIZA · Paúl Polakis · Nikolás Farandouris
Overview
In early July 2026, opposition leader Stefanos Kasselakis pressed PASOK to release documents on the removal of EU‑parliamentarian Nikos Farandouri’s wife from Greece’s Permanent Representation to the EU, warning that non‑compliance could trigger Farandouri’s expulsion from the party.
By late July the dispute had spilled onto social media. SYRIZA MP Pavlos Polakis used Facebook to demand an apology and resignation from former SYRIZA president Sokratis Famellos and criticised PASOK MEP Nikos Farandouri with harsh language, marking a shift from document‑driven demands to personal attacks.
On 24 July Polakis intensified his campaign, urging Famellos to “ask for forgiveness, give up the seat and go home” and labeling Farandouri a “fellow‑traveller and gyrologos.” Two days later he broadened the assault to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, accusing her of mishandling cultural heritage through the KELPNO agency and calling for her resignation. The episode reflects a deepening intra‑progressive clash, with rhetoric moving from procedural transparency to aggressive personal denunciations among Greece’s left‑wing parties.
