Greek regional agricultural and social welfare challenges
Overview
Regional authorities in Greece are addressing various administrative and economic crises affecting local populations. In Western Greece, the ‘Mazí Allázoume – Dytiki Ellada’ faction has criticized a three-year interruption in food and basic necessity distribution programs across Achaia, Elis, and Aetolia-Acarnania. This disruption follows the end of the TEBA program in 2023 and the cancellation of a 47.8 million euro tender for the replacement EVYS program, leading to calls for retroactive compensation for vulnerable citizens.
Simultaneously, leaders in Thessaly and Central Greece are petitioning the Ministry of Rural Development and Food for agricultural support. Requests include funding for infrastructure recovery following natural disasters, modernization of irrigation networks such as the Kopais system, and the construction of the Psachni dam. Regional officials are also seeking aid for livestock breeders, compensation for fire damage in Boeotia, and assistance regarding wild boar damage to crops.
