Greek regional student transit subsidies
Overview
Local authorities in Greece have implemented initiatives to reduce transportation costs for university students through significant subsidies.
In Heraklion, a collaborative effort between the University of Crete, the Municipality of Heraklion, the Region of Crete, and the Heraklion Urban KTEL has introduced a monthly student pass for 19 euros, a reduction from the previous 45 euros. This subsidy, covering nearly 60% of the cost, is intended to support students from the University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University.
In the Region of Western Greece, Governor Nektarios Farmakis has signed contracts to subsidize transit costs by 50% or more. Funded by the Regional Development Program (RDP 2026–2030) with a 3,000,000 euro budget, these measures cover the academic years 2026-2027 through 2028-2029 for students at the University of Patras and the University of the Peloponnese.
Specific cost reductions in Western Greece include Patras, where Zone A monthly passes will drop from 27.50 euros to 12 euros and Zone B will decrease from 37 euros to 17 euros. In Messolonghi, costs will be reduced from 40 euros to 20 euros. Initial agreements include a 700,000 euro contract with Urban KTEL Patras for the 2026-2027 period and a 60,000 euro agreement with Urban KTEL Messolonghi to cover travel through 2029.
