Greek school bus safety inspections

To mark the start of the 2026 school year, Greek authorities initiated safety inspections for school buses. The operation began in Attica, where the Attica Traffic Police and the Region of Attica focused on technical and administrative criteria, such as tire condition, vehicle inspection certificates, driver competence, and passenger capacity limits. Konstantinos Markouizos, the Vice Regional Governor for Road Safety and Traffic Management, stated that student safety is the “top priority.”

The inspections subsequently expanded to a nationwide operation conducted by the Hellenic Police. Of the 2,263 buses inspected, authorities issued 457 violations. The majority of these infractions, approximately 84.5%, were related to driver fatigue and time management, specifically concerning tachographs and non-compliance with working hours. Other recorded offenses included speeding, missing fire extinguishers, and seatbelt failures. Alongside the enforcement actions, police distributed educational leaflets to students and parents to promote road safety awareness.
