Greek taxi fare increases

Overview

Greece has implemented a new pricing structure for taxi routes connecting major airports to urban centers. Following negotiations between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and industry representatives, including the Athens Taxi Drivers Union (SATA) and the Panhellenic Federation of Taxi Owners (POEIATA), fixed fares for airport transfers have increased in both Athens and Thessaloniki.

In Athens, the fare from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport to the city center rose to 50 euros for single tariffs, with nighttime rates (00:00 to 05:00) increasing to 65 euros. In Thessaloniki, the fixed Macedonia Airport route fare increased from 25 to 28 euros for single tariffs and from 35 to 38 euros for double tariffs. Additionally, the hourly rate for taxi waiting time rose from 15 to 20 euros, and the maximum agreed waiting fare between drivers and passengers increased from 25 to 40 euros. These changes took effect following their publication in the Government Gazette (FEK).

SATA and POEIATA stated the adjustments are necessary for “economic sustainability” due to rising costs for fuel, maintenance, insurance, and taxes. While welcoming the decision, the unions noted they will continue to advocate for a new operational framework for the industry in Attica. Ministry sources clarified that the basic taxi tariff (single and double) and the minimum charge of 4 euros remain unchanged.
