Green Capital AI data center project in Argentina

Polish company Green Capital has announced plans to develop a large-scale artificial intelligence data center in Trelew, Chubut, Argentina. The project, announced with support from Chubut Governor Ignacio Torres, involves partnerships with firms including Schneider Electric, Wärtsilä, and Envision Energy to leverage the region’s high wind energy yields.

Initial reports highlighted local concerns regarding the environmental impact of the facility, specifically the high consumption of electricity and water in an area prone to summer water scarcity.

As the project advances, Green Capital has indicated a strategic shift, moving from previous green hydrogen initiatives in the region toward this data center model due to a global slowdown in the hydrogen market. The company intends to power the facility using wind and solar energy, supplemented by gas to ensure a continuous supply. Green Capital is currently seeking to join the Regime of Incentives for Large Investments (RIGI) and is evaluating necessary energy infrastructure. Local producers have noted that the required infrastructure, such as wind turbines, can coexist with existing sheep farming activities.
