Critical minerals mining, impacts and supply (July 2026 upd)
Entities: Polite Kambamura · Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt · Zimbabwe · President Emmerson Mnangagwa · Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe
Overview
The UN’s April 2026 report warned that critical‑mineral extraction creates polluted waterways and “sacrifice zones” for communities supporting clean‑energy technologies. Follow‑up research showed soil and water degradation cutting agricultural yields by up to 30 %, while OECD data in May recorded a surge in export restrictions on cobalt, lithium and rare earths, many driven by revenue goals in Africa and Asia. Zimbabwe’s raw‑mineral export ban spurred a sharp rise in domestic processing, especially for lithium and platinum‑group metals; the country later sought a six‑month extension to complete new plants. In late June the sector asked for a further extension, proposing to push the lithium‑concentrate export ban from Jan 2027 to June 2027 while Chinese investors Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine’s Bikita Minerals and Sichuan Yahua’s Kamativi built sulphate plants. Mines Minister Polite Kambamura launched an intensified anti‑smuggling campaign, estimating up to $15 billion lost annually and tightening enforcement on gold, lithium and diamonds. Ontario’s outlook strengthened: Hemlo Mining confirmed a 34 % rise in measured and indicated gold resources and a 39 % increase in inferred resources after 30,000 m of drilling since 2025. Generation Mining secured almost all financing for its $1 billion Marathon copper‑palladium project, leaving roughly $150 million to raise via equity. In July the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency awarded a $300 million contract for up to 16,000 t of battery‑grade lithium carbonate over five years, bids due 17 July, to build a strategic stockpile and curb reliance on China. The deal draws on Zimbabwe’s expanding output – lithium‑concentrate shipments rose 30 % in early 2025 and the country projects 160,000 t LCE by 2030. Zimbabwe’s Zhejiang‑owned lithium‑sulphate plant confirmed it will process only domestic concentrate, reinforcing the planned Jan 2027 export ban.
