Água Boa aircraft crash investigation

Overview

A twin-engine Cessna 402 aircraft crashed near Água Boa, Mato Grosso, on September 10, resulting in the deaths of one Brazilian and two Paraguayan nationals. Forensic experts described the crash as a near-vertical descent that occurred with extreme violence, leaving no evidence of an attempted emergency landing. The wreckage was consumed by fire, and the victims were found carbonized.

Investigations by the Civil Police and the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) are focusing on whether the aircraft was being used for international drug trafficking. The plane, which had been previously seized by Federal Police in 2017 and recently sold at a public auction, was operating clandestinely without Brazilian registration, airworthiness certification, or an approved flight plan. Authorities believe the aircraft departed from Goiânia without authorization, following a suspected flight path toward Venezuela.

To assist in the investigation, authorities used closed-circuit camera footage of the occupants boarding the plane to reconstruct the itinerary and contact the victims' families. The bodies have been transported to Cuiabá for forensic examination by the Official Forensic and Technical Identification (Politec) service. While likely identities have been established through security footage and family contact, official identification remains pending the results of genetic testing and forensic procedures.
